2022-2023 MISC Programming
MISC Events to Look Out For!
Recognizing the limited opportunities current undergraduate students have had to connect with graduate students in healthcare professional programs because of the shift to online learning, MISC aims to launch a Mentorship Program where students can be matched with mentors from different disciplines to learn more about their student journeys and careers. Additionally, interprofessionalism in healthcare is a concept that, although most are aware of, is not easily recognized in different healthcare contexts. MISC is working to highlight community examples of how interprofessionalism is demonstrated in various fields, such as mental health, Indigenous health, and within the COVID-19 pandemic relief efforts. MISC also looks forward to hosting more in-person socials to network with peers and professionals!
The Kaleidoscope of Healthcare: McMaster’s Interprofessional Collaborative
By Amy Paul, BHSc (Honours), Class of 2023, Co-Chair of MISC
Healthcare is multidisciplinary, where the focus is on the patient as a whole, rather than a particular diagnosis or treatment. As a result, interprofessional collaboration in healthcare continues to garner more attention.

MISC Past Programming
MISC has led several successful events in the past that encourage interdisciplinary learning and opportunities to develop interprofessional skills for students within the field of health sciences.
Professional Student Podcast
To provide more opportunities to virtually learn about the interdisciplinary nature of healthcare and connect with various disciplines, the Professional Student Podcast series on Spotify aims to enhance students’ professional, social, and educational development. Each episode explores a typical day in the life of a different role in our healthcare system, ranging from students attending McMaster programs to social workers and licensed chiropractors
F Words: Changing How We Think About Healthcare
The changing definitions of disability, especially within childhood disability, calls for new ways of formulating ideas about children, child development, and social-ecological factors in the lives of children with chronic conditions and their families. Led by Sarah Patterson, MSC, CCLS, and Dr. Peter Rosenbaum, MD, FRCP(C), DSC (HC), the F Words event explored the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) WHO Framework and the impacts of standardized language and common conceptual basis in healthcare.
Health Sciences Trivia Bowl
A fun way to team up with learners from different health professional programs and test knowledge was through our trivia night. The social event tested participants’ understanding of different topics within the health sciences, from anatomy and physiology to scopes of practice of healthcare workers. Participants had the opportunity to network and collaborate with students from various programs to gain a better idea of how we all work collectively to reach shared goals.
Social Media Initiatives
MISC has hosted a variety of initiatives on Facebook and Instagram to spark reflection and discussion. Our Instagram takeover series saw many students from different professional programs walk through their day-to-day life, while directly answering questions from viewers. After this, MISC launched the Humans of FHS initiatives which sought to showcase unique experiences of students across health professional programs in McMaster’s Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS). Submissions were encouraged from all FHS students to foster learning from each other’s stories and grow a community of empathy and support.
